Mason’s SciTech Campus celebrates the university's 50th Anniversary and looks ahead to the future

Mason's Science and Technology Campus in Prince William County was dedicated on September 24, 1997, with the opening of its first building, Colgan Hall (formerly the Occoquan Building).

What better way for new students to bond than climbing a tower made of logs and ropes? Democracy Lab and International Relations Policy Task Force students did just that. Along with a few professors.

Mason’s 50th anniversary celebration continued Friday, with the official unveiling of a project designed to transform its Science and Technology Campus in Manassas, Virginia.

Donna Tressler, who is January Employee of the Month, has been an administrative specialist for the Science and Technology Campus Executive Office since September 2014.

Most people with access to a 3D printer find themselves creating small objects or gadgets. But one student group working at the MIX at George Mason University each Friday is driven by a different dream.

“We build, design, test and plan to compete in solar-powered car competitions,” said Michael Riggi, president of Mason’s solar car team, HyperNova Solar. “[We believe] our car, when complete, will be the world’s first and only 3D-printed solar car.”

International graffiti artist TakerOne is working on a mural, “Fauna of Belmont Bay,” at Mason’s Potomac Science Center in Woodbridge, Virginia.

With COVID-19 continuing to spread throughout the world, there is a demand for rapid, noninvasive diagnostics. George Mason University researchers Robin Couch and Allyson Dailey, members of the College of Science and the Institute of Biohealth Innovation, are working to answer that call with their research on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for infectious disease detection.
