Last year, students at George Mason University joined contestants from around the world to predict the peak bloom date of cherry trees at  four global locations. The international Cherry Blossom Prediction Competition was a huge success and is gaining traction during its second annual run. 

Join the School of Business and Office of Sustainability for a special panel discussion on how organizations are changing to achieve critical sustainability objectives on Friday, March 3 from 10:30-11:30am in the Johnson Center, Meeting Room D.

On Saturday, October 1, 2022 Mason Exhibitions, with the support of Mason Facilities, the Patriot Green Fund (PGF), the Office of Sustainability, and community volunteers, planted 100 native hardwood tree saplings on the Fairfax Campus. This event was part of Atlantika Collective’s  current exhibition  at Mason Exhibitions Arlington. The tree planting event on Saturday was part of a socially engaged artwork,  200 Trees: A Performance Action, presented by visiting artist, Katie Kehoe.

A team of Mason students held a bat box-building workshop as their capstone project in the Sustainability in Action class.

Micah Hodges works as a success coach in University Life at George Mason University. In this role, Hodges works one-on-one with students to help them discover what success looks like to them. Outside of work, Hodges helps sustain and develop something else: our local environment and community spaces. As a volunteer with NOVA and District Cleanups, Hodges works alongside cadres of volunteers who remove trash from public spaces.

As an undergraduate, Doni Nolan, BA Biology ’14, had no visions of a future profession until she visited the greenhouse on George Mason University’s Fairfax Campus.

On October 1, Artist Katie Kehoe and a group of volunteers planted 100 native trees on parts of the Fairfax Campus.

It’s common to think of Indigenous peoples as living in the past. We may think of them around Thanksgiving or in old films and books. But Native Americans are very much here and now, said Jeremy Campbell, and after decades of struggle, that’s starting to be recognized.

In 2018, U.S. legislation granted federal recognition to six tribes in Virginia. A George Mason University team has been partnering with two of them, the Upper Mattaponi and Chickahominy nations, as they embark on being sovereign nations.

Work has begun on the “Necklace Phase One and Stream Restoration” project on George Mason University’s Fairfax Campus, Mason Facilities announced.

Did you know that up until the 2004 Commencement George Mason University graduation gowns were black? The university moved to green gowns in 2004, thanks to the work of a Traditions Committee.
