On October 24, Mason Artist-in-Residence Barefoot Puppet Theatre will take the stage in the Gregory Family Theater to entertain young audience members and their families with Galapagos George, an “uplifting eco-fable” (The Smithsonian) based on the real-life tale of Lonesome George, the last tortoise found on Pinta Island, who became a star and conservation icon.
The award-winning theater group will also participate in multiple residency activities this fall, including high school theater and craft workshops; visits to local elementary schools for performances of Can’t Catch Me, a retelling of the classic fairy tale “The Gingerbread Boy;” and school field trip performances of Galapagos George.
Want to learn more? The Hylton Center will also be collaborating with Manassas’s Lifelong Learning Institute to offer an introductory discussion about puppetry on October 22. Led by Barefoot Puppet Theatre founder and artist Heidi Rugg, this interactive demonstration will walk participants through basic puppet types and discuss puppetry as an art form, both historically and in contemporary popular culture. The course is free and open to the public.
