Complexions Contemporary Ballet Breaks Boundaries

Classical technique meets dynamic movement and rock ’n’ roll when Complexions Contemporary Ballet makes its Hylton Center debut on Sunday, October 4

Founded in 1994 by former Alvin Ailey dancers Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, the company has built its reputation on challenging conventions and drawing inspiration from a wide variety of musical and cultural influences. That spirit is on full display in a program that moves seamlessly from bold, expressive choreography to an exuberant celebration of rock music.

The program begins with a series of short works by Rhoden and other choreographers, including Heroes, Rhoden’s tribute to legendary musician David Bowie. Each piece showcases a different perspective on contemporary dance, from the raw physicality of Snatched Back from the Edges and First Comes Love to the more reflective And Then and Testament. The second half shifts the mood with Love Rocks, a radiant work set to the electric, guitar-driven anthems of Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Lenny Kravitz. Exploring themes of love and connection, the work pairs Complexions’ classical ballet foundation with the freedom and expressiveness of contemporary movement—a combination that appeals to dance enthusiasts of all types.

“Through their 30-year history, the company has toured all across the globe, featuring exciting programs and stellar dancers that will leave audiences inspired and spellbound,” said Director of Programming Adrienne Godwin. “Do you like ballet? This performance is for you. Do you like contemporary dance? This performance is for you. Are you a fan of David Bowie or Lenny Kravitz? This performance is definitely for you!”

Together, these works reveal what has made this company such a distinctive force: a willingness to embrace the unexpected while maintaining the precision and power of ballet. The result is a vivid demonstration of how expansive contemporary ballet can be.
