Mechanical engineer alum takes robotics to new heights

At George Mason University’s College of Engineering and Computing, Chigozie Erondu’s passion took shape through a deliberate commitment to hands-on learning, seeking every opportunity to build, test, and collaborate. 

“Every extracurricular that I do outside of my class time is going to be robotics-specific,” he said of his mindset entering college. As a mechanical engineering student, Erondu immersed himself in robotics-focused student organizations and research, forging a multidisciplinary experience that reflects the university’s commitment to access and opportunity. He joined clubs designing and building competitive robots while stepping into research roles that expanded both his technical expertise and collaborative skills.

Erondu’s drive to explore robotics led him into undergraduate research at the Mason Autonomous and Robotics Center (MARC) under Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Cameron Nowzari, where he contributed to the design and optimization of robotic blimps. The collaborative, interdisciplinary laboratory environment was transformative, exposing him to teams of students and researchers working across fields and degree levels, he said. 

His undergraduate experience culminated in a senior capstone project, for which his team tackled a complex challenge in autonomous robotics. Their work enhanced George Mason’s blimps for the Defend the Republic competition, enabling them to identify and capture multiple balloons and score several points in a single run—a 33 percent increase in scoring potential over the previous system. 

After graduation, Erondu carried his collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset into his role as an automation engineer at Northrop Grumman. There, he develops robotic systems that streamline the manufacturing of advanced aircraft components, applying robotics and autonomy at an industrial scale. Reflecting on that transition, he noted how his research experience provided critical context as he moved into a development-focused role. 

While industry has deepened his appreciation for implementation and scale, Erondu still values the exploratory nature of research. “It’s like a mental adventure,” he said. “You know where you’re trying to go, but how you get there is completely up in the air.” 

His advice to current students reflects George Mason’s culture of growth and resilience: “Don’t be afraid to lose yourself in the process. Embrace the failure. Embrace not knowing.” By investing time and energy into meaningful experiences, whether through research, projects, or collaboration, students can discover both their capabilities and their passions, he said. 

From undergraduate researcher to industry innovator, Erondu’s journey reflects the power of engagement both inside and outside the classroom and underscores George Mason University’s mission to cultivate curiosity, foster community, and prepare students to lead in a rapidly evolving technological world.
